Meeting of the Long Parliament

A new facebook group that was created a few days ago to pressure MPs to return to the House on January 25 despite prorogation, has attracted over twenty thousand members at the time of this blog posting. It was created by University of Alberta student Christopher White who yesterday was interviewed on the CBC's Power and Politics with Evan Solomon. He said he was angry when he heard that parliament was being prorogued and after reading about the Long Parliament decided something must be done. Political pundits and junkies will remember how 'Canadians Against the Coalition' used facebook to organize rallies in support of the government last year around this time.

A year ago from today, the anti-coalition protests were partially fueled by conservative partisanship and partially driven by Canadians disgusted by the prospect of a government led by Prime Minister Dion and propped up by the Bloc Quebecois. It remains to be seen whether or not those against prorogation can move beyond the usual partisan support against Prime Minister Harper and attract support from Canadians concerned with our parliamentary system of democracy. So far the leaders of the Opposition parties have not embraced this grassroots movement, with the office of the Leader of the Official Opposition stating that “We are interested in working with the opposition parties in regards to the Afghan detainee file but we are not interested in mock Parliaments..."
